Working my way through the hidden gems of Singapore, inspired me to design a print based on the wide array of colours and cultures that makes Singapore so diverse. The print that I created incorporates the stunning architecture that fills the streets of Singapore – in particular the cultural designs of the Peranakan houses along Emerald Hill.

Exploring the Arab quarter I came across a bright tile that was featured on many of the decorative shop fronts in the area and was able to work it back into my print.  The bright colours featured throughout the print were taken from the bright colours that overload your senses in Little India, which is filled with bright flowers and colourful trinkets that fill the market stalls.

The gold hardware on the bag represents the temples in Chinatown which are laden with gold statues; my favourite was The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum, a living cultural monument in the heart of Chinatown. It houses what some regard as the Sacred Buddha Tooth Relic in a stupa composed of 320kg of gold donated by devotees!

Overall my design captures the diversity and rich culture that can be found in Singapore – peer beneath the surface of a modern manicured city and you will literally get lost in a journey of exploration.
